Sensing London has created five “living laboratories” across London, where sensors measure a range of physical parameters, including air quality and human activity. Its team of expert data scientists analyse this information, teasing out vital insights to assess the impact that cities themselves have on human health and understand how people use infrastructures.

WHAT does the project do?

The London Living Labs is a city scale environment that is instrumented to enable experiments to be carried out in situ. It has been established by Intel, the Future Cities Catapult, researchers at ICRI Cities and a collective of local stakeholders in the city.

Making sensors a commodity

WHAT does the project do?

This project aims to find the optimum combination of sensors to detect footfall and other environmental parameters in bus shelters. Sensors are placed in bus stops in and around the Shoreditch area, as well as within buildings. The project aims to do this in a way which protects individuals’ privacy.

Programme delivery dashboard for Croydon Council

WHAT does the project do?

The London Borough of Croydon (LBC) has embarked on an extensive regeneration programme that in a period of five-years will involve more than 150 construction projects of all kinds to transform Croydon as a place to live, work and visit.

The Olympics-scale programme of development will see more that £4bn ploughed into extensive regeneration of the town’s centre into a vibrant mixed-use district. Living and working in Croydon will change forever.

Rezatech

What does the project do?

Rezatec’s single software platform provides easy to use, cost effective environmental intelligence products. Rezatec resolves global business problems caused by environmental change through the scientific analysis of satellite and ground data. Using its unique online platform, Rezatec processes large volumes of public and private domain Earth data, applying environmental models and statistical analysis to deliver commercial data products with minimised uncertainty.

Tower Bridge Idling

What does the project do?

What is the impact of vehicular idling when Tower Bridge is raised and can we nudge driver behaviour through road side signage? Working with Southwark council, the project is installing sensors on Tower Bridge road to measure the air quality when the bridge is raised and the potential for behavioural interventions using targeted, real-time public signage.

WHAT does the project do?

The Data Science Institute (DSI) at Imperial College London has been established to conduct research on the foundations of data science and to foster the development of advanced theory, technology and systems that contribute to the state-of-the-art in data science and big data.

Smart Cities encompass approaches to increasing efficiency in an urban infrastructure, where the efficiency gains are sought through the intelligent management, use of computing technology, and citizen participation, much of which is based around utilising urban data.

Environmental Performance for Small Businesses

WHAT does the project do?

Carbon Analytics has developed an online platform that brings sustainability to small businesses on their terms. Integrating with accounting platforms companies already in use, Carbon Analytics makes measuring, reporting and reducing environmental impact simple, engaging and rewarding. The project is helping London’s small businesses get carbon fit, reduce reporting burden and compete globally.
